Clean Money vote in Sac on June 6

AB 583 (The Clean Money and Fair Elections Act of 2007) will get a vote of the full California State Assembly this Wednesday, June 6. Most likely in the afternoon.

Last Thursday, an amended version of AB 583 was voted out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee by a vote of 12 to 5. In its current form, AB 583 will serve as a pilot program and allow California voters and candidates to see how a Clean Money system would work in California.

If enacted, the amended version of AB 583 (Hancock, D-East Bay) would create voluntary, fully-funded public financing for the 2010 Governor’s race, one open Assembly seat, and one open Senate seat.

It's a baby step, but I think it's an important baby step.

Here is a link to a piece by CA Clean Money that explains the pilot program.

If you've not already done so, now's a good time to use CA Clean Money's letter writing widget to send a letter to your representative asking them to support AB 583.

Clean Money bill AB 583, for Full Public Financing of Elections is great!

One piece of it is a big step: repealing Proposition 73, which is what got us into this mess in the first place. Prop 73 says no public funds for campaigns.

Prop 73 was the sneak attack bogus "campaign finance" proposition that only needed to beat the other one on the ballot. Since it won by more votes, the other actual campaign finance proposition (with strong campaign limits, etc) was defeated...

Making AB583 a pilot program and repealing Prop 73 is the best possible combination. It is easier to put that in front of the voter: Smaller price tag, only a pilot, worth a try. It's a smarter and easier way to reach the goal. It will build momentum.

So, it is an important and critical first step, allowing the legislature later go go for full statewide Clean Money bill later without having to go to the voters again.

Everybody needs to call their Assemblymembers to ask them to support this bill and call Nunez to thank him for his support!

Money's influence over our political system is the "global warming" of our democracy. It's a looming catastrophe, nobody's watching, and it will take significant work to change the way we're doing things.

Like our Governor Schwarzenegger is trying to clean up our environment, is his opportunity to clean up government. He said he wanted to "clean house". Clean Money in other states brings new faces, more women and minorities, more challenges to incumbencies. It's what he said he wanted.

I think Governor Schwarzenegger should be prepared to sign this into law and stand behind it for the vote because it's the true solution to the problems he ran his campaign on.

Schwarzenegger for Clean Money!
